Apple sells more computers than all Windows PCs combined

“Lies, damned lies, and statistics”

Apple’s Mac desktops and laptops may still count for a fraction of the global market for PCs, but when you tally up all the computers (iPhones, iPads, etc.) on which people actually get things done, the number of computers sold by Apple exceeds the number of Windows-based PCs shipped worldwide in the fourth quarter of 2013.

Comcast to purchase Time-Warner

This is major……

Comcast is set to buy Time Warner Cable in an all-stock deal that values Time Warner at $159 per share, CNBC’s David Faber reports on Twitter.

At $159, Comcast would be paying an 18% premium to today’s closing price. It would value Time Warner Cable at ~$45 billion. Comcast is valued at $146.5 billion.

This would make one gigantic cable company.

A beautiful feeling …

That moment when you have completed a technology project’s biggest hurdle with a clever hack.  The future is bright !

Most Epic Selfie in the world…wait…no… The Solar System !!!

A view of Earth from the surface of Mars

A view of Earth from the surface of Mars. More via JPL (including hi-res images):

This view of the twilight sky and Martian horizon taken by NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover includes Earth as the brightest point of light in the night sky. Earth is a little left of center in the image, and our moon is just below Earth. Two annotated versions of this image are also available in Figures 1 and 2. Researchers used the left eye camera of Curiosity’s Mast Camera (Mastcam) to capture this scene about 80 minutes after sunset on the 529th Martian day, or sol, of the rover’s work on Mars (Jan. 31, 2014). The image has been processed to remove effects of cosmic rays.

The future is here …ubiquitous computing

The UBI is only the first step to ubiquitous computing.

Think an environment-aware version of Siri — with sensors that allow for remote monitoring of temperature, humidity, air pressure, and ambient light, for starters. Plus the usual Siri Internet information look up stuff — but no cell phone (or computer) required.

The promo also says I should be able to use it to do Internet searches, send text messages and emails, ask questions, have it set timers and reminders, etc. — all hands-free.

South Korea using the MS Kinect to keep an eye on the North Koreans…

Epic use of technology  !

……South Korea monitors the DMZ with infrared motion sensors, but these sensors lack the ability to differentiate between animals and people. Enter Kinect. The South Korean military says it has been using a Kinect-based system, developed by Microsoft MVP Jae Kwan Ko, that can quickly and reliably pick out human intruders. The system has been in place since August 2013. As is fairly usual for military tech, we don’t have a whole lot of details on how the system actually works, beyond the fact that it alerts a nearby military outpost when a human is detected. The press release implies that the system is impressive because a) it’s cheap, and b) Kwan Ko was a self-taught wunderkind who defeated all the odds to become a Microsoft MVP.
